Gemma Hobson

Gemma Hobson MSc BSc (Hons)

Neurological Occupational Therapist

Gemma graduated from The University of Teesside in 2003, with an Honour’s degree in Occupational Therapy. Since then, Gemma has completed Master’s modules at Sheffield Hallam University and is looking to further progress her academic studies in due course.

Gemma began her working career with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2003, working as a rotational member of staff within clinical specialities including Orthopaedics, Elderly Medicine and Paediatrics. On receiving a promotion, she went on to work as a Band 6 rotational member of staff throughout in-patient services. These included the Neurorehabilitation unit at Chapel Allerton Hospital, then onto the Neurosurgical wards at Leeds General Infirmary. When an opportunity arose to be promoted to a Band 7 Specialist Stroke and Neurological Team Leader at Barnsley Hospital, Gemma threw herself into the challenge of setting up an acute in-patient service. Gemma was responsible for recruiting new members of the team to establish a new acute stroke and neurology occupational therapy team. During Gemma’s time in post, the team expanded from 2 to 7 members of staff, with expansion from a 5 to a 7-day service. Gemma spent time researching and developing the service from scratch, implementing outcome measures, a stroke care pathway as per government guidelines and spending time developing staff members’ skills and development. After 9 years in this post, Gemma found it was time to explore a new challenge with a change in specialism. This came in the form of joining a community paediatric therapy team, with the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust between 2017-2018.

For the past three and a half years, Gemma has enjoyed working within the private sector, enhancing her rehabilitation skills within the community. Gemma enjoys the freedom to work with clients, their families and support workers in their own homes and out in the community, pushing client’s boundaries and encouraging them to progress their personal goals. Gemma is passionate about empowering clients to maximise their independence in leisure, social, domestic and personal activities of daily living and has a keen interest on vocational rehabilitation. Gemma has a range of training including cognitive rehabilitation, fatigue management, upper limb therapy, postural care management and vocational rehabilitation.

Gemma is based at our MOTIONrehab Leeds clinic.
