Neurological Physiotherapist

Lauren Southern graduated with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy from the University of Birmingham in 2005. Since qualifying, Lauren has worked in the charitable and private sector, as well as for the NHS. Recognising early on that her passion was for neurological physiotherapy, Lauren worked for the MS Society and for a Neurological Care Unit; working with patients with MS, stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury and cerebral palsy. Lauren then worked for Henshaws College in Harrogate; working with students with learning disabilities and complex physical health needs. Lauren completed her core Band 5 NHS rotations with Leeds Community Healthcare between 2009 – 2013 including orthopaedic, musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation; then worked for Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust Fast Response and Community Rehabilitation Team, before taking up her current position with Harrogate & District Community Learning Disability Team in 2014.

Lauren is particularly experienced in working with people with communication difficulties, autism or neuro-diversity and cognitive / learning disabilities; using a holistic approach and reasonable adjustments. She has significant experience of working with people with MS, Cerebral Palsy and Stroke, amongst other conditions. Lauren is a passionate advocate for 24 hour postural care and has undertaken extensive additional training in postural assessment and intervention and teaches carers and families to understand the theory and implement the practical treatment with confidence. Lauren enjoys ‘thinking outside the box’ to make therapy an enjoyable part of daily living, wherever possible, and is committed to helping every patient fulfil their full potential and achieve the goals that matter to them. Lauren’s other specialist interests include Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy), balance rehabilitation and falls prevention.

Lauren is based at MOTIONrehab in Harrogate.
