Alison's Story

Stroke

Following a stroke in September 2022, Alison experienced a number of challenges affecting the left side of her body, including muscle tightness, reduced balance and postural control, and impaired awareness of her left side.

These difficulties affected Alison’s movement, confidence and ability to complete everyday activities independently.

In November 2025, Alison began an Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Programme at MOTIONrehab’s Leeds clinic, with the aim of rebuilding her strength, improving her mobility and regaining greater independence.

“I immediately felt this was a place I could find my old self again. I’ve started to walk better, move my arm and hand, and found more confidence and hope in my recovery.”

Intensive Stroke Rehabilitation

Alison’s main goals were to become more independent with everyday activities, including personal care, dressing and mobility.

Her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme provided high-frequency, structured therapy over a concentrated period. This intensive approach combined specialist neurological physiotherapy, advanced rehabilitation technology and task-specific training.

By completing a higher volume of focused and repetitive therapy, Alison was able to work consistently on the movements and activities that mattered most to her.

Her programme was designed to encourage neuroplasticity, helping the brain strengthen and develop the pathways needed for movement, balance and functional independence.

Alison’s Rehabilitation Programme

A key focus of Alison’s rehabilitation was improving her awareness of the left side of her body and increasing the amount of weight she could place through her left leg.

She completed targeted exercises to improve her alignment, posture, balance and ability to shift her weight safely during standing and walking activities.

Alison also used advanced rehabilitation technology as part of her intensive programme.

The BALO

The BALO was used to support intensive balance and postural control training.

Its dynamic body-weight support allowed Alison to practise challenging standing and movement activities in a safe and controlled environment. This helped her work on maintaining a more upright posture, shifting her weight and improving her confidence while standing.

The OMEGO

Alison also used the OMEGO to retrain lower-limb movement and walking patterns.

Through repetitive, guided stepping and cycling activities, the OMEGO helped Alison work on her coordination, range of movement and lower-limb strength. Real-time feedback supported her in developing greater awareness and control of her movements.

Alongside the technology, Alison completed hands-on neurological physiotherapy and functional activities designed around her personal goals.

Alison’s Progress

Throughout her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme, Alison made meaningful progress in several areas.

She improved her upright posture and balance and became more able to place weight through the left side of her body. This supported greater stability when standing and walking.

Alison also developed greater confidence in her mobility and began walking with improved control.

Her progress extended beyond walking. Alison became independent with dressing and undressing, helping her regain greater control over an important part of her daily routine.

She also noticed improvements in the movement of her left arm and hand, alongside a renewed sense of confidence and hope in her recovery.

The video recorded during Alison’s programme demonstrates the progress she made, from completing activities with close support to walking with greater confidence and control.

Continuing Alison’s Rehabilitation Journey

Alison’s rehabilitation journey is continuing, with the longer-term goal of being able to walk without assistance.

Her programme will continue to focus on improving posture, balance, strength and weight-bearing through her left side, while reducing her reliance on external support.

Alison’s story demonstrates how an intensive, personalised approach can support meaningful improvements in movement, independence and confidence following a stroke.

With specialist support, advanced rehabilitation technology and Alison’s determination, she continues to move closer to her goals.
