Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation
Geoff suffered a spinal cord injury in September 2023. He subsequently bed bound & paralysed from the neck down. With limited movement to start he then progressed to wheelchair use whilst in hospital. On discharge he had increased tone, spasms in his arms, legs and overall weakness with limited mobility via wheelchair.
In January 2024 he started Motion Rehab with an intensive package of 80 hours over 4-6 weeks. He received a mixture of hands-on physiotherapy as well as using the Tyromotion devices to allow increased repetition of movement and data feedback.
He soon progressed to using a wheeling Zimmer frame, and then to a walking stick with supervision.
Geoff was having difficulties with his left upper limb also. He had limited range of movement and poor left-hand dexterity and strength. He used a combination of Tyromotion devices such as:
- Pablo – Which uses sensors to give visual feedback on screen to show his strength and movement in real time, and how this then improves with guidance from the therapist. Meaning he could improve the quality and complete high repetitions of movement.
- Amadeo – Which allowed him to open and close his hand with assistance and then progress to being able to move each digit individually, and then further to complete repetitions against resistance to build strength and tolerance.
- Diego – To de-weight his left arm, and therefore he could focus on the movement, following games on screen to prompt, without the weight of his arm hindering his efforts. His shoulder control is much improved, with less compensation from his trunk.
- Myro – Which enabled him to practice reaching away from his body, and with the use of a pen, and other accessories for hand positioning skills.
With previous goals achieved such as progressing from his mobility, Geoff made goals in March 2024 and again in March 2025 through to 2026. These include further improving his mobility to achieve a form of independence, complete stairs, getting in and out of his bath at home, using cutlery to cut up his own food, and to get in and out of his hot tub!
Over the last 10 months, with continued input from physiotherapists, alongside the robotic equipment we are pleased to say Geoff is now mobilising more with and without walking aids indoors and using his walking stick and rollator outdoors for short distances. He has started going up and down stairs with supervision and is even back driving again over limited time periods.
Geoff has worked incredibly hard, completing home exercise plans alongside his therapy, pushing himself to achieve, and continues now to work on his balance, finer motor skills, and upper limb strength and control.
Here is some feedback we received from Geoff:
“With consistency, commitment and focus I believe anyone can reach their potential and with each achievement you feel elation, empowerment and it is a great feeling to become less reliant on your carers”.
We are continuing to work with Geoff on his goals.
