Stroke Rehabilitation
Jean Pierre had a Stroke in 2023. Following his recovery in hospital, he continued with rehabilitation at home as well as travelling to various countries for rehabilitation. In February he came from Paris to our Hull clinic to start a 4-week Intensive Rehabilitation package consisting of 4 hours per day, 5 days per week.
His main goals were to control his hand better, increase his walking distance and be able to return to swimming in the future. This 4-week package was primarily aimed at regaining function of Jean Pierre’s right hand and arm.
Jean Pierre was unable to pick up and hold items in his hand, extend his wrist in tasks and had reduced range of his right upper limb movement overall. He used compensations to achieve a lift of his arm and used his left hand to lift his right arm and place objects into his hand. He was unable to hold cutlery and had reduced extension of his fingers. Jean Pierre benefitted from traditional neurological physiotherapy sessions as well as use of our robotic suite.
He used our upper limb robotics to work on his range of movement from shoulder, elbow, wrist to hand. And put this range and skill into functional tasks such as picking up objects and moving them around. He also utilised our Saebo hand equipment and used FES to stimulate wrist extension.
Jean Pierre also utilised the Lexo to work on his exercise tolerance and ditance endurance. The Pablo gait assessment was used to analyse his gait pattern over time and support his treatment plan. Jean Pierre had use of the gym where he could increase his overall strength and power.
After the first intensive package Jean Pierre was able to lift a cup to his mouth to drink from, started to hold a pen, could pick up small blocks and transport them. He could also complete longer distances on the lexo with less fatigue and he could balance with more control. Jean Pierre reduced his comensations whilst using his right arm in tasks, being able to move his arm away from his body more efficiently. He was gaining confidence with his arm and hand. He went home, with a tailored exercise plan and made plans to return to us after a short break.
Jean Pierre returned for a further 4-week Intensive package in April. He was ready to continue his journey and had similar goals, to improve his hand and arm function. He continued to use the robotic technology and recieve hands on physiotherapy, as well as
utilising the gym, Stim, and saebo glove.
After the second intensive package Jean Pierre continues to make imrovements such as being able to pick up larger objects such as a tennis ball sized ball. He is now reaching out with his right arm to retrieve objects rather than initiate with his dominant left arm, more frequently, and can move his arm further away from the side of his body with less effort. He went back home with an updated personalised exercise plan.
Jean Pierre is planning to return later in the year, and we will continue to work towards his goals.
