LES'S STORY

Stroke Rehabilitation

When Les Brown first came to MOTIONrehab Hull in 2022, he faced significant challenges following a stroke that left him with weakness on the entire left side of his body. At the time, he was wheelchair-bound, relying on aids for basic transfers and unable to stand unaided. His left arm was severely affected, and he had notable weakness in his left leg.

Despite these difficulties, Les came to MOTIONrehab with clear goals: to improve his lower limb strength, increase his exercise tolerance, better manage the tone in his left arm, and regain the ability to stand and walk using a tripod stick. More importantly, he was determined to regain his independence — including the possibility of returning to driving.

Over the past two years, Les has shown incredible commitment to his rehabilitation. With the support of his physiotherapists and the use of advanced rehabilitation technology at the Hull Clinic, he’s made significant strides. At home, he continues to work on his arm and hand using splints and active-assisted exercises, and has maintained a strong focus on improving his stamina and mobility.

Recently, Les and the team have started working on a key personal milestone: being able to safely transfer into the driver’s seat of a car — a crucial step toward his goal of driving an adapted vehicle. Practice sessions have focused on stand transfers and developing the movement needed to get in and out of a car seat confidently. The plan is to trial this with his son’s car in the coming weeks.

Les’s journey wouldn’t be complete without recognising the unwavering support of his wife, Debbie. Her encouragement and involvement in his rehabilitation have played a vital role in his progress.

Les’s story is a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and the life-changing impact of targeted neurorehabilitation. With continued support, he’s on the path to regaining greater independence — and one step closer to getting back behind the wheel.
