Electrical Stimulation

At MOTIONrehab® we are skilled in the assessment and use of electrical stimulation to help promote rehabilitation. Electrical stimulation is a technique used to ‘artificially’ contract a muscle by delivering a small electric current to the muscle and nerves via electrodes placed on the skin. The technique is not painful and is frequently described as a ‘tingling’ or ‘pins and needles’ sensation beneath the electrodes.

Once the electrodes are placed on the skin the device is set up to activate the muscles to achieve the desired movements. Adjustments can be made to tailor the treatment to the chosen muscle to allow it to contract and relax thereby allowing the muscles to ‘exercise’. Electrical stimulation has been shown to be an effective therapeutic option for individuals suffering from pain and weakness and spasticity.

The benefits patients may experience include:

  • Decreased pain
  • Muscle re-education and Strengthening
  • Increased range of motion
  • Increased circulation
  • Decreased spasticity
  • Reduced swelling
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Improved overall function

At MOTIONrehab® we use a range of devices to deliver electrical stimulation, including the AvivaStim XP, Stiwell Med 4, MicroStim and the Intellistim. The chosen device will depend on the goals of treatment and which/how many muscle(s) we intend to stimulate.
