Amanda's Story

Stroke

Following a stroke, Amanda began her rehabilitation journey at MOTIONrehab’s Leeds clinic with a clear determination to regain her independence and improve her quality of life.

When Amanda started her Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Programme in February 2026, she experienced increased muscle tightness and reduced activity in her left arm, alongside difficulties with walking.

These challenges affected her movement, confidence and ability to take part in the everyday activities that mattered most to her.

Intensive Stroke Rehabilitation

Amanda’s goals were both personal and meaningful. She wanted to be able to walk her dog independently again and prepare to complete a 5km walk.

To support these goals, Amanda began a structured Intensive Rehabilitation Programme at the Leeds clinic.

MOTIONrehab’s intensive programmes provide high-frequency, focused therapy over a concentrated period. This approach allows clients to complete a greater volume of targeted and repetitive rehabilitation, helping reinforce more efficient movement patterns and support neuroplasticity.

Amanda’s programme combined specialist neurological physiotherapy with task-specific exercises designed around her individual needs and goals.

Amanda’s Rehabilitation Programme

A key focus of Amanda’s programme was improving her walking ability and helping her move with greater balance, control and confidence.

Her rehabilitation included exercises to improve the way she shifted her body weight onto her left side while standing and walking. This was important for supporting a more balanced and efficient walking pattern.

Amanda also worked on increasing her walking speed and reducing her reliance on a walking aid.

Alongside her walking rehabilitation, Amanda completed focused therapy for her left arm and hand. Following her stroke, muscle tightness and reduced activity limited how naturally she was able to use her upper limb.

Her intensive programme included repetitive upper-limb exercises designed to improve movement, reduce tightness and develop greater control.

Amanda also worked on the coordination between her trunk and left arm. Improving this connection helped support more natural movement during walking and functional activities.

By combining high-intensity therapy with targeted exercises, Amanda was able to practise these movements consistently and build on her progress throughout the programme.

Amanda’s Progress

Amanda has made fantastic progress during her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme.

She has improved her balance and her ability to shift weight through the left side of her body when walking. This has contributed to a more controlled and stable walking pattern.

Amanda has also increased her walking speed and is now able to walk without the need for a walking aid.

Her progress has extended to her left upper limb, where she has developed improved movement and experienced a reduction in muscle tightness.

She has also achieved better coordination between her trunk and left arm, helping her movements become more connected and efficient.

These improvements have supported Amanda in becoming more confident and independent in her mobility.

Looking Towards Amanda’s Next Goal

Amanda is now looking ahead to the next stage of her recovery.

She plans to begin Pilates to continue developing her strength, balance, flexibility and overall fitness. This will also support her preparation for an upcoming 5km walk, which represents an important milestone in her rehabilitation journey.

Her longer-term goal remains being able to walk her dog independently and confidently.

Amanda’s story demonstrates how a personalised Intensive Rehabilitation Programme can help someone work towards meaningful, real-life goals following a stroke.

Through specialist support, consistent practice and her own determination, Amanda continues to make positive progress towards greater independence and quality of life.
