Ellen's Story

Stroke

Following a stroke, Ellen began her rehabilitation journey at MOTIONrehab’s Leeds clinic in April 2026, determined to improve her mobility and regain confidence in her movement.

When Ellen started her Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Programme on 13 April 2026, she experienced weakness throughout the left side of her body, alongside increased muscle tightness in both her upper and lower limbs.

These challenges affected her walking pattern, balance and overall quality of movement.

Intensive Stroke Rehabilitation

Ellen’s main goal was clear: to improve her walking pattern so she could move more efficiently, naturally and confidently.

To help her work towards this goal, Ellen completed a structured Intensive Rehabilitation Programme at the Leeds clinic.

MOTIONrehab’s intensive programmes provide high-frequency, focused rehabilitation over a concentrated period. This approach allows clients to complete a greater volume of specialist therapy and repetitive practice, helping reinforce more effective movement patterns and support neuroplasticity.

Ellen’s programme combined specialist neurological physiotherapy, advanced rehabilitation technology and targeted exercises based on her individual needs.

Ellen’s Rehabilitation Programme

A key focus of Ellen’s rehabilitation was improving the amount of weight she could place through the left side of her body.

Following her stroke, weakness and muscle tightness made it difficult for Ellen to distribute her weight evenly when standing and walking. This affected the control and efficiency of her walking pattern.

Through targeted exercises and repeated walking practice, Ellen worked on increasing weight-bearing through her left leg and developing a more balanced and controlled movement pattern.

Her programme also focused on improving her walking speed and encouraging more natural movements during each step.

Alongside her lower-limb rehabilitation, Ellen completed exercises designed to improve the function of her left arm and increase her awareness of the left side of her body.

Using the LYRA Gait Rehabilitation System

As part of her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme, Ellen used the LYRA gait rehabilitation system to support her walking practice.

The LYRA provided guided, repetitive stepping movements that allowed Ellen to practise a more effective walking pattern in a safe and controlled environment.

This high level of repetition helped her work on the timing, coordination and quality of each step, while encouraging greater weight-bearing through her left side.

The LYRA was used alongside hands-on neurological physiotherapy and functional exercises to help Ellen transfer the movements she practised into everyday walking.

Ellen’s Progress

Ellen made fantastic progress throughout her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme.

She improved her overall walking pattern and increased her walking speed, helping her move with greater efficiency and confidence.

Ellen also became more able to place weight through the left side of her body. This supported better balance and control when standing and walking.

Her progress extended to her left upper limb, where she developed improved function and greater awareness of how her arm and the left side of her body were moving.

These improvements have helped Ellen build confidence and establish a strong foundation for the next stage of her rehabilitation journey.

Continuing Ellen’s Recovery

After completing her Intensive Rehabilitation Programme in April 2026, Ellen planned to join a gym to continue developing her strength, fitness and endurance.

She will then begin further rehabilitation in June 2026, allowing her to build on the improvements she has already achieved.

Ellen’s story demonstrates how a personalised and intensive approach can support meaningful improvements in walking, movement and confidence following a stroke.

Through specialist rehabilitation, advanced technology and her own determination, Ellen continues to work towards greater mobility and independence.
