Traumatic Brain Injury
Jake sustained a traumatic brain injury following a motorbike accident in Thailand.
The injury left him with reduced balance and poor coordination, significantly affecting his ability to stand and walk independently.
Jake now attends MOTIONrehab’s Hull clinic, where he is completing a personalised neurological rehabilitation programme designed around one clear and meaningful goal: to walk independently again.
Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
Following his injury, Jake experienced difficulties with balance, coordination and control of his movements.
These challenges made standing and walking difficult and affected his confidence when moving.
Jake’s rehabilitation programme has been tailored to his individual needs and combines specialist neurological physiotherapy, advanced rehabilitation technology and task-specific training.
His sessions focus on rebuilding the physical skills required for standing and walking, while allowing him to practise movement safely and consistently.
Jake’s Rehabilitation Programme
A key part of Jake’s rehabilitation is improving his ability to maintain an upright position with greater balance and control.
His programme includes repeated practice of standing, weight shifting and walking activities. These exercises are designed to improve his core strength, posture, coordination and confidence.
Jake also works on developing his overall fitness and endurance, which supports his ability to complete longer periods of standing and walking practice.
His interest in fitness has become an important part of his recovery, helping him stay motivated as he works towards greater independence.
Using the BALO
Jake uses the BALO as part of his rehabilitation at MOTIONrehab Hull.
The BALO supports Jake while he practises standing and completing balance activities in an upright position.
This enables him to work on his posture, core strength and ability to shift his weight safely. It also allows the rehabilitation team to introduce increasingly challenging activities while maintaining the support Jake needs.
By repeatedly practising these movements, Jake can develop greater stability and confidence when standing.
Using the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer
Jake also uses the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer to practise supported walking.
The LEXO allows him to complete a high number of consistent and precisely guided steps in a safe environment. This repetitive walking practice helps reinforce the movement patterns required for a more effective gait.
During his sessions, Jake works on improving his coordination, lower-limb strength and walking endurance.
The repeated stepping movements also support neuroplasticity, helping the brain develop and strengthen the pathways involved in standing and walking.
The skills practised using the LEXO are then carried into hands-on physiotherapy and functional walking activities.
Jake’s Progress
Through regular rehabilitation, determination and support from the MOTIONrehab team, Jake continues to make positive progress towards walking again.
The combination of BALO balance training, robotic gait rehabilitation and specialist neurological physiotherapy is helping him practise standing and walking with greater precision and consistency.
Jake has also developed greater confidence in his abilities and remains highly motivated to improve his fitness and mobility.
Reflecting on his rehabilitation, Jake said:
“Since coming to MOTIONrehab, I have found that it has helped me massively to progress to be able to walk again. I get so much support and encouragement from the staff. I am very keen on my fitness, which is also helping me to walk again.”
Continuing Jake’s Rehabilitation Journey
Jake continues to work towards his goal of independent walking.
His rehabilitation will remain focused on improving his balance, coordination, strength and endurance, while helping him rely on less physical support during standing and walking.
Jake’s story demonstrates how specialist neurological rehabilitation, advanced technology and consistent practice can support meaningful recovery following a traumatic brain injury.
With his determination and the continued support of the team at MOTIONrehab Hull, Jake is working towards greater confidence, mobility and independence.
