John's Story

Cerebellar Ataxia

After being diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia, John began attending MOTIONrehab in October 2025 to improve his balance, mobility and overall independence.

Cerebellar Ataxia is a neurological condition caused by damage to the cerebellum, the area of the brain responsible for coordinating balance and movement.

For John, the condition has primarily affected his left leg, reducing his stability and confidence when walking.

Cerebellar Ataxia Rehabilitation

From the outset, John had several clear and meaningful goals.

He wanted to improve his balance, increase his walking speed and regain the confidence to walk without a walking aid.

John also wanted to become more independent and return to living a more active lifestyle.

To support these goals, the team developed a tailored neurological rehabilitation programme combining specialist physiotherapy, advanced rehabilitation technology and functional movement practice.

John’s Rehabilitation Programme

A key part of John’s programme has involved improving the movement and control of his left leg.

His sessions have focused on balance, coordination, weight shifting and developing a more controlled walking pattern.

John has also progressed from supported exercises to more dynamic and functional movements. These activities have helped him build the strength and confidence needed to manage more complex, everyday situations.

As his rehabilitation has progressed, John has taken part in outdoor walking practice, including navigating slopes and uneven surfaces.

He has practised walking forwards, backwards and sideways on inclines, helping him prepare for the varied environments he encounters in daily life.

Using the BALO

John has used the BALO to support his balance and postural training.

The BALO provides dynamic body-weight support, enabling John to practise standing, weight shifting and more challenging balance exercises in a safe environment.

This has allowed him to work on his stability and control while gradually reducing the level of support he needs.

By repeatedly practising these movements, John has developed greater awareness of his posture and more confidence when standing and moving.

Using the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer

John has also used the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer as part of his rehabilitation.

The LEXO provides guided, repetitive walking practice designed to help retrain gait patterns and improve coordination.

During his sessions, John has completed a high number of consistent steps while working on the timing and control due to the consistent positioning of his affected leg.

This repetitive practice supports neuroplasticity and helps reinforce more effective movement patterns that can transfer into everyday walking.

John’s Progress

John has made significant progress since beginning rehabilitation at MOTIONrehab.

He has improved the movement and control of his left leg and developed greater confidence when walking.

John is also progressing towards walking independently without a walking aid.

His ability to manage functional environments has improved, including walking outdoors, navigating slopes and moving across uneven ground.

These changes have helped John become more active and independent.

Importantly, he has also started to feel more like his old self again, enjoying movement with greater confidence and returning to activities that matter to him.

Making a Difference

John had a cruise booked in May and set himself another meaningful goal: to remain active, enjoy the holiday and avoid using a walking aid while he was away.

John will continue working on his balance, walking speed, coordination and confidence, helping him become more independent across a wider range of environments.

His journey demonstrates how consistent, targeted rehabilitation can support meaningful improvements in mobility and quality of life for people living with long-term neurological conditions.
