Oli's Story

Brain Injury

Following a serious motorbike accident in 2019, Oli sustained a significant traumatic brain injury affecting the left side of his brain. This resulted in complex physical challenges on the right side of his body, including significant weakness, limited movement, muscle stiffness and tightness that caused him considerable pain.

In 2021, Oli began attending MOTIONrehab as part of his ongoing neurological rehabilitation journey.

Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation

When Oli first came to MOTIONrehab, his main goal was clear: to improve his walking and regain as much independence as possible.

The effects of his brain injury made it difficult for Oli to move his right leg independently. He experienced reduced strength and range of movement, alongside muscle stiffness that affected his posture, balance and walking pattern. For a long period, Oli required support to move his right foot forward when taking a step.

As part of his rehabilitation programme, Oli has worked with the MOTIONrehab team using a combination of specialist neurological physiotherapy and advanced rehabilitation technology.

A key part of Oli’s treatment has involved using the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer. The LEXO provides highly repetitive and precisely guided walking practice, helping Oli work on the quality and consistency of his movement.

During his sessions, Oli has focused on strengthening the muscles needed for walking, improving his range of movement and developing a more controlled posture when standing and stepping. The repetitive movement provided by the LEXO also supports neuroplasticity, encouraging the brain to create and strengthen the pathways required for more natural movement patterns.

Oli’s Progress

Through regular rehabilitation and continued determination, Oli has made meaningful progress.

Over the last six months, he has achieved an important milestone by beginning to step his right leg through independently. This is a significant improvement after a long period in which he required support simply to move his foot forward.

Oli’s rehabilitation is now focused on building on this progress by improving his posture and increasing the amount of body weight he can place through his right leg.

He is also working towards reducing his reliance on external support, including his walking stick. His sessions include targeted standing and walking activities designed to improve strength, balance and control on his right side.

The progress shown in Oli’s walking demonstrates the impact that focused rehabilitation, advanced technology and consistent practice can have following a traumatic brain injury.

Oli continues to work hard towards his goal of walking with greater confidence, control and independence.
