Denise’s Story – Denise started therapy with MOTIONrehab at our Leeds clinic in July 2022. She was experiencing weakness on her right side after being treated with radiotherapy for brain tumours in 2018. Denise developed some weakness resulting in a series of falls. This made her become fearful of falling and movement in general. Over time this influenced Denises engagement in day-to-day activities, and she stopped doing things she enjoyed, such as going out to shopping centres to shop and eat out, going for walks with her family and attending sports matches, specifically, going to support the Leeds Rhinos.
Denise completed two intensive therapy packages with MOTIONrehab. When working with the occupational therapist one of her main goals was to focus on community integration and start visiting places she has been avoiding.
Initially Denise required the use of a walking stick to walk short distances outside, she would not climb stairs outside of her home and was very anxious when moving around open spaces. By the end of her treatment at MOTIONrehab Denise had managed to walk around a shopping mall, managing the stairs and escalators. Denise started walking to the local reservoir with her husband and she got to visit the Headingley stadium to practice moving around the seats, using the steps, and larger areas – with plans to start attending matches again.
Denise was able to manage her anxiety in crowded areas and felt more confident moving around that she was able to leave her walking aid at home.
