This week the MOTIONrehab team had training on mobility and transfers for clients with cervical spinal injuries. As you can see from the picture the training included lots of rolling!

Spinal Cord Injuries are a result of damage to the spinal cord. This causes a lack of or disruption to the messages sent back and forth between the brain and the body. Individuals can present with a wide array of problems depending on the degree of injury to the spinal cord (complete or incomplete) and the area of damage. As a general rule, any bodily function below the level of damage can be affected. This is usually presented as weakness and/or altered sensation.

An incomplete injury is caused when only a part of the spinal cord is damaged or disrupted.  The result can be many different symptoms which vary from person to person even with the same level injury as it depends on the specific nerve fibres damaged. This can include symptoms predominately on one side of the body or different symptoms on either side. If the damage to the spinal cord is severe and affects all of the spinal cord the injury is described as complete. This usually results in a permanent loss of function below the level of the injury.
