Functional Electrical Stimulation

MOTIONrehab® are recognised as one of the UKs leading experts in Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and Director, Sarah Daniel, is regularly invited to speak both nationally and internationally about FES. MOTIONrehab are able to offer both private and NHS FES services across the Yorkshire and Humberside region. The team are highly experienced in the assessment and provision of FES for drop foot and walking problems enabling our clients to reach their full potential.

What is FES?

FES delivers a small electric current to the nerves that in turn activates weakened muscles usually around the ankle but it can also be used for problems around the knee as well. The FES replicates the natural movements of the leg and foot during walking and can be very helpful at preventing trips and falls.

There are a number of different FES devices available in the UK. All of the devices are designed to lift and lower the foot during walking. Some devices are designed to also assist with knee control as well. The devices vary in the way that the stimulation is triggered and how the device is worn (i.e. wired or wireless devices).

MOTIONrehab are able to provide assessments for Fesia and OML Pace. MOTIONrehab continue to provide support for the other FES devices. However, this does not include Bioness L300 Go.

Can FES help you?

MOTIONrehab would recommend an assessment to see if FES can help. FES can be helpful for weakness caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord  following  a Stroke or other neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Cerebral Palsy (CP) Unfortunately if the drop foot is caused by injury to the peripheral nerves (nerves once they have left the spinal cord) then FES is not appropriate.

What are the next steps?

At MOTIONrehab we would recommend an assessment with one of our highly trained neurological physiotherapists to see if FES is suitable for you.  MOTIONrehab will also provide you with the options available and look at which device is best suited to you.

MOTIONrehab can also help apply for NHS funding as our clinics are an accredited NHS FES Outreach Service for the region.
