FES OML PACE

Regain More Functional Movement & Mobility

The OML PACE Drop Foot FES device is a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) system designed specifically to assist individuals with foot drop, a condition often caused by neurological impairments such as stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury, or cerebral palsy.

Foot drop leads to difficulty lifting the foot while walking, which can cause tripping and instability. The OML PACE Drop Foot FES device provides electrical stimulation to stimulate the muscles involved in foot and ankle movement, enhance walking stability and reducing falls.

The National FES Service operates an NHS Outreach Service at MOTIONrehab, providing accessible support for PACE FES users. Clients referred on the NHS can be seen in one of our specialist clinics, where MOTIONrehab offers expert assessment, review, and ongoing support for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). This outreach service ensures individuals receive high-quality care closer to home, helping to improve mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

How the OML PACE Drop Foot FES Device Helps in Rehabilitation

  • Improves Foot Clearance – The device stimulates the muscle to lift the foot, preventing foot drop and enabling better foot clearance while walking.
  • Restores Natural Gait – By providing muscle activation during the swing phase of walking, the device helps restore a more natural gait pattern and promotes smoother, more confident walking.
  • Reduces Fall Risk – By improving foot clearance and preventing the dragging of the foot, the device helps reduce the risk of tripping and falling, promoting safer walking.
  • Stimulates Muscle Strength – The electrical stimulation helps activate the anterior tibialis and other leg muscles, improving strength over time and reducing the likelihood of muscle atrophy.
  • Promotes Neuroplasticity – The repetitive stimulation of the muscles can reinforce motor pathways in the brain, supporting recovery of motor function and coordination.
  • Increases Walking Confidence – By correcting foot drop, users can walk more confidently and with less fear of stumbling, which can enhance overall mobility and independence.
  • Reduces Spasticity & Contractures – The stimulation helps prevent muscle tightness and contractures in the foot and ankle, which can occur due to immobility.
  • Customizable Settings – The device allows for adjustments in intensity, frequency, and duration of the electrical stimulation to meet individual patient needs.

How to Use the OML PACE Drop Foot FES Device

  • Position the Electrodes – Attach the electrode pads to the skin over the appropriate muscles in the lower leg, typically the anterior tibialis muscle.
  • Adjust the Settings – Set the stimulation intensity, frequency, and duration according to the user’s needs, comfort, and rehabilitation goals. The device typically allows for adjustments to ensure the stimulation is effective.
  • Activate the Device – Once the electrodes are in place and settings are adjusted, activate the device. The electrical stimulation will help lift the foot during the swing phase of walking, which helps to prevent foot dragging.
  • Walking with the Device – The patient should begin walking while the device provides stimulation.
  • Monitor and Track Progress – Regular use of the device helps track progress in foot clearance, walking speed, and overall gait improvement. Patients can gradually increase the intensity of stimulation as they gain strength and control over their movements.
