Stim2Go®

Advanced Functional Electrical Stimulation for Neurological Rehabilitation

At MOTIONrehab, we continually invest in innovative rehabilitation technology that helps people achieve more from their recovery. The Stim2Go® is an advanced, wearable Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) system that enables rehabilitation both in the clinic and during functional activities.

Unlike traditional FES systems that are designed solely for exercise bikes or specific tasks, the Stim2Go® is a versatile rehabilitation tool that can be used across multiple stages of your recovery. From FES cycling and muscle strengthening to walking practice and transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS), it provides a flexible platform to support neurological rehabilitation.

Our experienced neurological physiotherapists tailor every treatment programme to your individual goals, ensuring the technology is used at the right time, in the right way, to maximise your recovery.

What is the Stim2Go®?

The Stim2Go® is a lightweight, wireless electrical stimulation device that delivers carefully controlled electrical impulses to muscles and nerves through adhesive electrodes placed on the skin.

These impulses activate muscles that have become weak or difficult to control following neurological injury or disease. By combining stimulation with active movement and repetitive practice, the device helps reinforce normal movement patterns and encourages meaningful rehabilitation.

Unlike many conventional FES systems, the Stim2Go® is not limited to one piece of equipment. It can be used throughout a rehabilitation session, allowing therapy to progress from cycling to standing, walking, reaching or strengthening exercises without changing devices.

How Does Stim2Go® Work?

Following a detailed assessment, your neurological physiotherapist will identify which muscles require stimulation and programme the Stim2Go® specifically for your needs.

Small surface electrodes are positioned over targeted muscles, delivering gentle electrical stimulation at carefully timed intervals. The stimulation works alongside your own voluntary effort to help produce smoother, stronger and more coordinated movements.

As your rehabilitation progresses, the programme can be adjusted to provide greater challenge, encourage increased muscle activation and support more complex functional activities.

The Stim2Go® is designed to do much more than simply stimulate muscles. It supports active rehabilitation by encouraging repeated, meaningful movement that helps the nervous system relearn motor skills. By combining stimulation with active exercise, the Stim2Go® enables patients to achieve higher intensity rehabilitation than may otherwise be possible.

How the Stim2Go® Helps in Rehabilitation

  • Improving circulation
  • Enhancing joint mobility
  • Increasing exercise tolerance
  • Improving movement quality
  • Improving muscle activation and strength
  • Reducing muscle wasting associated with reduced movement
  • Increasing cardiovascular fitness when used with FES cycling
  • Supporting functional activities such as standing and walking
  • Promoting greater confidence during rehabilitation

What is Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation (tSCS)?

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is one of the most exciting developments in neurological rehabilitation. Unlike conventional FES, which stimulates individual muscles directly, tSCS applies electrical stimulation over the spine to influence the spinal cord networks responsible for movement. Rather than simply producing muscle contractions, tSCS aims to increase the responsiveness of the nervous system itself by a mechanism called neuromodulation.

This may help improve:

  • Muscle activation
  • Motor control
  • Functional movement
  • Walking practice
  • Standing ability
  • Upper limb recovery
  • Spasticity management

At MOTIONrehab, tSCS is used alongside active rehabilitation and functional practice—not as a stand-alone treatment—helping create an optimal environment for movement training. Emerging clinical work suggests that sequencing tSCS before functional practice may temporarily reduce spasticity and improve the effectiveness of subsequent rehabilitation exercises. (FES Cycling)

While research into tSCS continues to evolve, early evidence is encouraging and this technology represents one of the most promising advances in neurorehabilitation. (FES Cycling)

Who Can Benefit From Stim2Go®?

  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Acquired Brain Injury
  • Peripheral nerve injuries

What Happens During Treatment?

Suitability depends on your individual presentation and will always be determined following a specialist neurological assessment.

Every Stim2Go® programme begins with a comprehensive assessment by one of our specialist neurological physiotherapists.

Following assessment, we create an individual rehabilitation programme tailored to your needs.

Regular reassessments ensure your rehabilitation continues to progress as your strength, movement and function improve.

UK’s first Intensive Robotic Neurological Rehabilitation Centre

In April 2018, MOTIONrehab launched the UK’s first Intensive Robotic Neurological Rehabilitation Centre. The centre in Leeds went on to be recognised by the Financial Times, Google and leading European policy makers as one of the Top 100 companies.

Following the success of MOTIONrehab’s Intensive Robotic Neurological Rehabilitation Centre in Leeds and after seeing such positive outcomes for its clients MOTIONrehab launched a second Intensive Robotic Neurological Rehabilitation Centre in Hull during December 2020 and a third in March 2024. MOTIONrehab’s Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Centres accepts national and international referrals and are International Reference Centres for treatment, teaching and research.
